Have you ever looked up at a sky full of stars and wondered, “What is my place in all this?” If you have, you’re not alone. This question is at the heart of what is called the “absurdity of existence.” But don’t be daunted by this fancy term. It simply means that sometimes, life can feel a bit confusing, peculiar, and hard to make sense of.

We’re here on this awe-inspiring planet, trying to understand the meaning of our lives, while the universe seems to carry on without regard for our existence. This notion leads us to a concept called “life purpose.” It’s the belief that each of us has a unique mission or goal to accomplish in our lifetime. We yearn to find this purpose, to understand why we are here. Yet, the universe appears indifferent to our searching. This contradiction forms the crux of the “absurdity of existence.”

But now, let’s consider another intriguing concept: free will. Do we truly have control over our lives? We decide to lift a hand, and it moves. But can we explain how it moves? We don’t instruct each muscle and tendon individually. We don’t direct the intricate dance of neurons that results in motion. This realization brings us face to face with a profound question: What do we actually control?

This question connects to the absurdity of existence. If we don’t control the mechanisms of our movement, it’s tempting to say we control nothing. We react to life, observing the effects of actions that have just occurred. Yet, even in this uncertainty, we yearn for purpose and meaning.

We ask ourselves, “Why are we here?” “What’s our purpose?” “What does life mean?” The universe, however, remains silent. Still, we keep seeking. We set goals, build relationships, learn new things, and create art. All these activities help us find purpose, giving meaning to a world that often seems random.

Our human existence is a paradox. We know our time here is finite, yet we often live as though we’re immortal. We’re capable of immense love and terrible cruelty, a testament to our multifaceted nature.

The concept of the “absurdity of existence” encompasses these thoughts. It includes our pursuit of purpose in an indifferent universe, the peculiarity of being human, and the mystery of free will. But it doesn’t aim to depress us. Instead, it nudges us to reflect, to question, and to appreciate the mystery of life.

This journey into the mysteries of existence isn’t a solitary one. Thinkers from Descartes to David Chalmers, Dr. David Hawkins, and Donald Hoffman, four of whom I am very familiar, have pondered these questions, offering their insights to help guide us. Despite their diverse perspectives, they all encourage us to embrace the journey of self-discovery and the search for meaning.

It’s essential to remember that even if we don’t understand all the intricacies of our existence, we have the power to shape our lives through our choices, actions, and attitudes. We may not know precisely how our hand moves when we decide to lift it, but we do know that we can decide to extend that hand in kindness, in creativity, and in pursuit of knowledge. This in itself gives our lives a sense of purpose and meaning.

To sum it up, the universe may seem vast and indifferent, and our existence may seem absurd at times, but we are not powerless. We have the capacity for free will, for thought, for love, and for understanding. We have the ability to seek our purpose and to create meaning in our lives. And in this journey of self-discovery and understanding, we are not alone.

The journey into the absurdity of existence, the quest for purpose and understanding, the exploration of free will and control – all these aspects of life’s grand adventure – are not just intellectual pursuits. They are deeply personal, deeply human journeys that we all share. They shape our lives, our relationships, and our understanding of the world and ourselves.

Don’t let the seeming indifference of the universe deter you from your journey. Embrace the mystery, embrace the journey, and embrace the power of free will and self-discovery. After all, it’s not the answers we find, but the questions we ask and the journey we undertake that truly define us.
