As of today, we find ourselves in the thick of something we never imagined—a global pandemic that has sent many of us home with nothing but time. The powers that be have told us it’s okay, that everything will be taken care of: no power or water shut-offs, some cash to keep things moving, and the expectation to work from home if we can. So, for now, we’re good.
But here’s what I want you to think about: What do you do with all this time, now that the daily grind has slowed down? Sure, you can binge-watch Netflix, stock up on essentials, and settle into the comfort of your couch. But what if there’s something more waiting for you during this forced pause? What if this moment is your opportunity to rediscover yourself?
We don’t often get this kind of chance in life. The routines, the commute, the constant motion—it’s all on hold. Maybe now is the time to pick up that guitar you haven’t touched in years, start that garden you’ve been thinking about, or dive back into a hobby you set aside long ago. Or perhaps you don’t have one of those things, and that’s okay. This is your moment to explore something new, something that excites you beyond work and obligations.
You might be tempted to brush off this notion of play. After all, we’re adults with responsibilities, right? But think about it—many of those responsibilities have been cut back for now. That oil change can wait. You’re probably driving less than ever. The usual tasks have been stripped down to essentials. So what’s left? You.
Your inner child, the part of you that was once creative, curious, and free, is still in there. It’s just been buried under the weight of responsibilities, routines, and societal expectations. But right now, as the world slows down, you have the rare opportunity to reconnect with that part of yourself. The part that knows how to imagine, how to create, and how to find joy in the little things.
Some of you might say, “Steve, the world is in chaos, people are suffering, and this is all just a cover-up!” I hear you. There’s plenty to worry about, and it’s easy to get caught up in the fear and anxiety. But here’s the truth: whether or not the crisis is a conspiracy or a real threat, you are still at home, and this moment is yours. You have the power to decide how to use it.
So, what do you want to do with this time? Maybe it’s as simple as picking up a book you’ve been meaning to read, trying your hand at something new, or allowing yourself to relax in a way that feels right for you. Whatever it is, don’t waste this moment waiting for things to go back to “normal.” This is your chance to create your own new normal—one where you feel more connected to yourself and the things that bring you joy.
The world may never have a pause like this again. So use it. Get creative. Get playful. Rediscover the parts of yourself that have been buried under the weight of daily life. This is your time to reassess what truly matters and start living in a way that feels more authentic to who you are.
As for me, I’ve streamlined my own work to adapt to this new reality. Online counseling is more in demand than ever, and I’ve cut my session rates to help make it more accessible to those who need it. Whether you’re looking for recovery support, someone to talk to, or just need to check in, I’m here, working from home, just like you.
So, what will you do with this time? Play. Explore. And most importantly, take care of yourself.
