In early 2013, a local woman who worked with people using shamanic tools suggested that I go on a rune quest. As someone who has always been interested in Nordic culture, I was immediately intrigued. My lifelong fascination led me to read some of the oldest books on the topic, such as The Sagas of the Icelanders, written in the 12th century. However, at that point, I didn’t know much about the runes themselves and thus began a journey in which I cultivated a strong connection with Algiz.
Determined to delve deeper into the world of these ancient symbols, I took it upon myself to create my own set of runes and uncover their meanings through personal experience. To make my runes as authentic as possible, I consulted historical and modern sources, including the Sagas of the Icelanders, to determine the ideal materials and methods for crafting them.
After extensive research, I decided that Oak wood would be the most suitable material for the runes, as it is both durable and spiritually significant in Norse culture. To ensure the longevity of my rune set, I opted for Danish Tongue Oil to seal the wood, preserving its natural beauty and strength. I selected milk paint to fill in the lines for the actual rune carvings, making the symbols more prominent and visually striking. Finally, I purchased a carving knife to precisely etch each rune into the Oak wood rounds.
Once I had determined the materials needed, I sourced them from various suppliers, ensuring their authenticity and quality. I ordered the Oak wood from a farm in Norway, Danish Tongue Oil from a Danish supplier, milk paint mix from a place in New England, and a carving knife from an online marketplace. When all the materials arrived, I began preparing to create my runes for the ceremony.
The Rune Creation Ceremony
To infuse my rune set with spiritual energy and personal intent, I held a ceremony to craft the runes. I started by peeling the bark from the Oak branch and cutting it into half-inch sections. Each section would become a unique rune, and due to the natural variations in the wood, no two pieces were exactly the same.
